Shopping for gym equipment could be quite a challenge because there are so many to choose from. How do you know which one is for you? Should you choose the treadmill, the rowing machine, the spin bike, the arm developer, the leg press or the abdominal machine? Should you also get a dumbbell rack, a weight tree, and some bumper and weight plates? Well, it all depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Most equipment has specific features and functions, and you can choose what to buy next based on your current fitness goal. Here are a few questions you need to answer to help you choose your next gym equipment:

1. What’s your goal?

Consider this one thing before buying your gym equipment because this will narrow down your list. If you’re into cardio, then you might consider looking at things like ski machines, treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, stair steppers, and rowing machines.

They are all designed to burn fat and calories. If you want to improve your cardio workouts, then these machines are the ones you should be looking for. If you want to focus on strength training, then check out ankle and hand weights, exercise mats, and resistance bands and tubing. These devices are all designed to build strength.

2. What’s your budget?

Another important thing to consider when buying exercise equipment is your budget. If you’re on a low budget, then there are a lot of dumbbells that you can choose from, with different weights. On average, you can spend about $15 on a dumbbell but even up to $15,000.

If you have enough money to spare, then you can choose from the more professional equipment, which is priced at $10,000 or more. Remember though, that being on a tight budget doesn’t mean you have to settle for the cheapest one you see. There is still equipment you can buy for a low price with good quality. Just be cautious about it.

3. Are you just upgrading?

If this is not your first time to buy gym equipment, then you have a pretty good idea of what a good brand is or how a piece of specific equipment performs. If you just want to upgrade your treadmill, and if your old one seemed to be working fine for you, then just look for the same brand and buy the newest model, or go from manual to electrical.

Or if you think you’re getting at bored at lifting 10kgs of dumbbells every day, then why not try buying a pair of 20kgs? Just choose the same brand if it worked for you previously.

4. Is it safe for you?

Not all people are advised to use exercise equipment on their own. Although regular exercise is advisable, some equipment is not because of health reasons. So before buying one, make sure that you’re allowed to use it by talking to your doctor and asking permission.

For example, if you have a heart problem or you currently experienced hypertension but still want to keep a healthy lifestyle, then talk to your practitioner about the best gym equipment you can use.

5. Is the space at your home or office enough?

Just because you can buy a piece of equipment doesn’t mean you have to without considering other factors, such as the space in your room or office where you’re going to place it. Your eyes might be glued to that professional treadmill, but what if it won’t fit?

You don’t want to go back to the store just to replace it when you could have chosen one in the first place. Also, you won’t be able to get much out of your exercise if your equipment is crammed in that little corner and you can’t move freely while using it.

6. Have you done a test run?

Before buying exercise equipment for adult, you should be able to test it and feel comfortable with it. Just like any other thing you buy, like a car, a cell phone, an appliance, or even a simple light bulb, you want to test it out to make sure that it’s working properly.

With exercise equipment, you need to try running on that treadmill or riding that stationary bike to see if you’re comfortable using it. If something feels wrong, then definitely tell the staff about it or move on to the next equipment until you find the right one.

The type of equipment you need to buy could also depend on what level you’re in, in terms of being an exercise buff. Are you a beginner, an intermediate, or an advanced trainer? If you’re at the beginner level, then some of the things you could look at are dumbbells, an exercise mat, a Bosu ball, and an adjustable bench.

If you’re at the intermediate level, then you can look at barbell racks or a complete set of plates as well as treadmills. And if you’re at an advanced level, then you can check out abdominal benches, stretching and squat machines, and bench presses.
